In the first phase of the Sudbury project, Raising the Roof restored five vacant single family houses, extensively renovated them to modern standards, and gently densified them by adding secondary suites.

During a co-ordinated point-in-time homelessness count on Oct. 8, 2024 participants counted 500 people experiencing homelessness in Greater Sudbury. Sudbury is a northern regional hub, often drawing people from the outer rural areas, who come to Sudbury seeking employment, housing and services.

The first six affordable units were completed in May 2023 and the second four units were completed in December 2023. The units are a mix of 2 and 3 bedroom apartments. The residents are supported by the Sudbury Centre for Transitional Care.

In addition to preventing homelessness through housing and supports, 31 people facing barriers to employment received hands-on trades training and support through Community Builders, a social enterprise contractor that was able to expand from central Ontario and open up a new branch in Sudbury thanks to the work, doubling their training capacity in the process.

This project was Raising the Roof's first in Sudbury, but it won’t be the last. Because of the success of this first phase of the Sudbury project, in November 2024 the City of Greater Sudbury Raising the Roof's ability to purchase of up to five more homes to create even more impact in this northern Ontario hub city.

I joined the program in hopes to be self-sufficient and be able to get back into the workforce after many years of being a homemaker. In the program I got to work on demolition and renovation projects like framing, drywall and flooring. It was an incredibly positive work/learning environment, and I was excited to go to work everyday."
