ABOUT RAISING THE ROOF
Since 1997, Raising the Roof has been leading the way in long-term solutions to homelessness.
Raising the Roof started with the Toque Campaign, selling toques in support of organizations doing amazing work to help end homelessness. After years of expansion and organizational change we still sell toques, but as a means to fund the work of building and preserving new units of affordable housing with supports across Canada.
For most of its history, Raising the Roof was dedicated to research, policy development and advocacy, with an emphasis on innovation with the goal of answering the question: how do we prevent homelessness in Canada? The research led to several pilot projects, most of which were passed off to other organizations after the model was developed and tested. The last of the pilot projects was so successful in preventing homelessness and so holistic in addressing some of the root causes of homelessness that, instead of passing off the program to another organization, Raising the Roof had a major organizational shift and delved into developing, owning and operating affordable housing, with the pillars of including trades training and employment opportunities and ongoing wraparound supports for the tenants.
