More In addition to organizing its own fundraising events, Raising the Roof is delighted to be the recipient of a number of third-party fundraisers each year. We would like to thank the volunteers behind the following events for helping us to raise much needed dollars for solutions to homelessness. Walking the Red Road for HomelessnessNoel Joe is following his dream, right down the red road. One night, three years ago, Noel, a 21-year-old Mi’kmaq from Conne River First Nation Reserve, had a dream about leaving his home in Conne River and walking 560 kilometers to St. John’s. This year, along with his mother, Eileen Joe, Noel plans to make this a reality.
As a shelter worker at the centre, Noel saw first-hand the major problems associated with homelessness in the province, and especially in the St. John’s metro area. Noel witnessed the daily struggles that some people have with securing an affordable and safe place to live. It was then he realized he wanted to walk for youth, Aboriginal people and others in our cities and rural communities who are dealing with homelessness. “Every human being in this society deserves a place to call home,” said Noel. “That’s when I said: I know what I want to do… I’ll walk for homelessness… I’ll walk for the person that has to sleep in their car, on park benches, in shelters, on people’s couches. I’ll walk for the family down the street who can barely make rent or feed their children… I’ll walk for the seniors who are on fixed incomes… I’ll walk the Red Road for homelessness.” On July 4, 2010, on the heels of the annual Conne River Pow Wow, Noel and Eileen will leave Conne River, walk up the Bay D’Espoir highway, then take a trailway along the Trans Canada Highway that will lead them right in to St. John’s. They will be following the footsteps of Noel’s father and uncles who made a similar trek in 1985. The mother and son team plan to camp along the way and will have a support team available when necessary. Noel and Eileen will make stops throughout the province including Grand Falls-Windsor, Terra Nova, Goobies, and St. John’s. When they arrive in St. John’s around mid-August, the city will give them the welcome they deserve with an event planned at Bannerman Park. Join them on their walk or support them through pledges, as they walk in support of Raising the Roof’s Youthworks Initiative and our partner agencies in St. John’s NFLD, Choices for Youth and St. John’s Native Housing & Friendship Centre.
